Summerland Council will not authorize a new marina on Lakeshore Drive.
At the December 13 council meeting, council passed a by-law to change the zoning designation of an unsurveyed portion of Okanagan Lake adjacent to 13607 Lakeshore Dr., to prohibit a marina among other uses.
The zoning of the property has changed from the Heavy Water Use Zone to the Recreational Water Use Zone 2. Although both zoning designations allow water activities, the recreational zone does not allow water activities. marinas, docks or other structures.
Previously, a marina anchored at the Oasis Waterfront Development had been proposed. The zoning at the time would have allowed the marina and would have required a referral to the provincial government. This marina would have been close to the existing Summerland Yacht Club.
However, those who commented or submitted written statements for a public hearing on December 13 opposed the marina project.
âNatural beauty must be preserved,â Andrew Massey said in a letter to the council. âThere is already very little waterfront in Summerland for the public to see and that would only fill more with private access. “
“Adding more boats to the area will only further decrease the available space where the public and visitors can enjoy the lake using their paddleboards, kayaks and other self-propelled watercraft,” Hill said in a statement. letter to council.
He added that the municipality should consider revising the plan for the Lower Town of Summerland.
Sonja Schloegl, who owns properties near the proposed marina, also opposed the proposal, as there is already an issue with parking for vehicles and boats in the area in the summer.
âWe believe that allowing a marina in this location goes against our key mandate,â said Colleen Power, President of the Summerland Recreational Society. The company operates the Summerland Racquets Club, adjacent to the Oasis development. She added that all but one member of the recreational society were opposed to a marina on the site.
Under the Zone 2 designation for recreational water use, boating, recreational boating, provincial Crown land permitted uses and utilities will be permitted on the site. Rental of marina equipment, docks, boat launches, boat lifts and other related uses are not permitted.
