Beautiful and tough: The modernist design of the Yacht Hotel in Vlorë, Albania hides a durable, waterproof foundation built on PENETRON ADMIX treated concrete.

Last but not least, the ease of application of the Penetron system accelerated the construction schedule. Once the summer season has started in Albania, navigation will be smooth for the Yacht Hotel.

The Yacht Hotel opened in January 2020 and is the newest beach hotel in the popular resort town of Vlorë, Albania. The hotel’s concrete structures are protected from chloride attack – and resulting corrosion – by the Penetron system, formulated to react with concrete components to produce an integral, impermeable crystal formation.

Former Albanian capital and third largest city in the country (> 130,000 inhabitants), Vlorë is located on a bay which marks the border between the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea. A popular seaside resort known for its clear waters and brilliant sandy beaches, Vlorë enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year.

Designed by Klodian Burgjia of Arkonik Studio, the Yacht Hotel in Vlorë features a distinctive Modernist style with alternating horizontal ribbons of concrete and glass – and a rooftop pool with views of the Adriatic Sea just 50 meters away. The $ 2.2 million project includes 21 rooms, a restaurant, private parking, a bar and a private beach. The 4-star luxury hotel is the newest hotel in Vlorë and is slated to reopen this summer after going out of business during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As we expected, a construction site so close to the seaside had a high water table,” explains Theodor Mentzikofakis, Managing Director and Partner of Penetron Hellas. “Ad Sinani’s engineer and the project contractor / developer asked Penetron Hellas to provide a complete solution to protect all of the hotel’s concrete structures from corrosion.

Vlorë’s mild marine environment is ideal for beach-loving tourists, but poses a serious threat to untreated concrete structures. The proximity to seawater promotes the penetration of chloride ions into porous concrete, which can quickly lead to corrosion of non-galvanized reinforcing steel embedded in the concrete, often leading to increased maintenance and possibly failure. possible of the structure.

The integral waterproofing solution provided by the Penetron system greatly improves the durability of concrete and reduces permeability. This extra protection also helps to eliminate the threat of rebar corrosion which can seriously compromise and deteriorate the concrete matrix.

Penetron Hellas has specified the complete Penetron system range for the basement structures and the hotel rooftop swimming pool. Beton Vlora, the ready-mixed concrete supplier for the Yacht Hotel project, used PENETRON ADMIX for the foundation slab and walls of the hotel’s basement structures and for the rooftop swimming pool. PENEBAR SW-45 water barrier was used to seal construction joints. Topical applications of PENETRON and PENECRETE MORTAR were made to all exposed concrete surface repairs.

“Last but not least, the ease of application of the Penetron system accelerated the construction schedule,” adds Theodor Mentzikofakis. “Once the summer season has started in Albania, navigation will be smooth for the Yacht Hotel. “
