Are the sand and water of NJ beaches safe to touch?

Six drownings in a week before summer even officially started put a damper on early-season fun and relaxation on the Jersey Shore.

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection works daily to ensure the sand is safe.

“Sand-sized particles just don’t collect bacteria unless large amounts of sewage are dumped on the beach for some reason. Of course, if a seagull poops on the sand and you sit in it, well, that’s your problem.”

Needles and swabs

Farrell shared the anecdote that a study in Atlantic City revealed that 13 tonnes of bird waste falls on the beach during a given winter.

Other hazards

“Avouons-le, il y a quoi, 300 000 personnes dans l’eau un week-end d’été ? Et les sauveteurs font un travail formidable pour sauver la plupart d’entre eux, mais en ce moment, les sauveteurs viennent juste to be in service since Memorial Day,” he said.
